SIGMALA LOOKS TO NORTH AMERICAN MARKET TO FULFUL GROWTH PLANS
Lincolnshire-based Sigmala, manufacturers of equipment used to improve the speed and efficiency of converting machinery, is making inroads into the lucrative North American market.
The company, which received a £250k cash injection from Catapult Venture Managers as part of a £500k funding package 12 months ago, has a bright future ahead with key products lines now in manufacture. The company also received a grant from the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) of £140k over three years for Research & Development (R&D) work.
Sigmala’s unique equipment for the converting industry offers significant cost and efficiency advantages for the end user. Equipment can be new or retro-fitted to a large worldwide installed base. Graham Mold, director with Catapult Venture Managers, says that one of the company’s new products – the SL knife holder range – should prove to be a big seller. “It is the world’s first electronic knife holder in which all parameters, including the cant angle, can be set-up remotely,” he says. The SL range was in development for two years and incorporates a number of intelligent control features, including automatic setup, knife wear detection and compensation as standard. Real-time diagnostics and predictive maintenance functionality are available as additional features. In 2007 Catapult introduced key figures Mike Gulliford and Tim Walker to the Board of Sigmala. Both highly experienced Senior Board level executives, they have helped the company strategically, as well as being ‘hands-on’ when required. Sigmala’s team of experienced engineers include specialists in mechanical, electrical and software design. Mike Gulliford commented: “We combine traditional techniques with new and emerging technologies. Our machines incorporate regenerative braking and distributed intelligent drives to save energy and reduce the machine footprint. We are also at the forefront of research into predictive diagnostic and predictive maintenance software to reduce downtime. “Our range of products can be fitted to new machines or retrofitted to installed machinery in the field. We also design and build bespoke machinery,” he said.
